Avaya has released software 6.2.1 for the Ethernet Routing Switch 5500/5600 series switches.

Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 Software Release v4.2.3.0

Avaya has released v4.2.3.0 software for the Ethernet Routing Switch 8300. This software release is significant in that it finally adds LLDP-MED functionality and support to the 8300 switch for IP telephony deployments.

LLDP-MED

The purpose of this feature is to allow an IP Phones to get voice VLAN, DSCP and priority,tagged/untagged traffic type’s information through LLDP MED Network Policy TLV. LLDP-MED functionality is configured on a per port basis.

When an IP Phone sends a LLDP PDU with MED capabilities the switch will notice that it has a MED endpoint device on that port and will reply with a PDU containing the Network Policies TLVS together with the other non-LLDP-MED TLVs already set for transmission.

The LLDP–MED standard specifies that if the MED capability TLV is not received from an endpoint device on a port than no other MED TLVs except med-capabilities will be sent to the user in a PDU.

The VLAN information is sent to the IP Phone through LLDP-Med Network Policy TLV. Multiple Network Policy TLVs can be sent in one LLDP PDU, each for a distinct application type.

Ethernet Routing Switch 8600/8800 Software Release v7.0.0.2

Avaya has released v7.0.0.2 software for the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600/8800. This maintenance release resolves the same issue that 5.1.3.1 and 4.1.8.5 was released to address;

  • 8692 CP boards with the new PCMCIA controller could experience high cpu utilization and other systemic effects while accessing certain types of PCMCIA cards. The problem has now been addressed. (wi00734221 and wi00733439)

IST Instability in large Multicast networks

Avaya has released a technical support bulletin detailing an issue that can impact IST stability in a large Multicast network. I know a number of readers have had issues with Multicast support in extremely large networks.

In large campus networks with SMLT topologies where multicast routing protocols (such as PIM) have been provisioned and scaled to large amounts of multicast senders and receivers, it has been observed that high CPU utilization
(sometimes combined with high CPU buffer utilization) leading to IST instability may occur during re-convergence of the multicast routing protocols after failures.

Additional information;

Release 5.1.3.0 has been modified with changes that were originally introduced in release 7.0.0.0. These changes allow IST protocol messages to be processed even under high CPU utilization. This is achieved by checking to see if IST control messages are queued up (but not yet processed) before deciding that the IST session has timed out and needs to be brought down. Each line card recognizes and counts IST control messages when they arrive and before they are sent to the CP, and the IST message processing logic on the CP will check for outstanding IST control messages before deciding the IST needs to be brought down due to inactivity.

Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 – issue with new 8692SF

I thought the recent software release of 5.1.3.1 and 4.1.8.3 for the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 was very odd in that they only included a single fix (wi00564790). Well it seems there’s now some additional information regarding the issue. Avaya has released a technical bulletin documenting an issue with the new version of the 8692SF that can impact the CPU utilization of the switch. If you have one of the newer 8692SFs (you can identify them from the original 8692SF by the description below) then you should most definitely upgrade to 5.1.3.1 or 4.1.8.5 or 7.0.0.2 (soon to be released).

The new re-spin version module can be identified by the PCMCIA card slot now having front panel artwork that shows “PC Card” while older versions of the module show “PCMCIA”. Additionally, the new version of the hardware can be identified via the Hardware Revision 52.

Otherwise there doesn’t appear to be any need to upgrade your ERS8600 to this specific release.
