Maybe this is not a right place to ask this question.
However, I was wondering if you would share some best practices to configure ports on Avaya ERS-5000/5500 series switches for Signaling Server, Voice Gateway Media Cards, Media Gateways, etc.
Perhaps some QOS real-life examples to remark/classify traffic at Layer 2.
I found Nortel/Avaya QoS is hard to understand.
Maybe any forums that do discuss this topic.
Thank you once again for your much appreciated help time.

This is usually for the VLAN that will have the IP phones attached… this will tell the switch which VLAN to return in the LLDP advertisements, etc.

We have a Call Server CS1000 etc. connecting to Nortel/Avaya ERS5520 switch setup as L2 device.
When creating VLANs for TLAN and ELAN network/subnets.
One of the options is if you want it to be “VoiceEnabled”.
The question is.
Do I enable those VLAN’s as a VoiceEnabled for CS1000/ Call Server, SMG Server or is this only for VLAN that has VoIP phones connected to it?
Thank you in advance for your time and answer.

If you wipe the firmware you’ll be left with a piece of hardware that won’t do anything when you plug it in.

I have performed this without issue.
1> Go to the Avaya download site and get the secure image if you are entitled to download this
2> Make an ASCII and binary backup of your switch, just to be safe
3> Upload the new diagnostic image
4> Upload the new software image
5> After and check that everything is still there
6> Reconfigure anything that needs it, like enabling SSH access and disabling telnet

Thanks for your reply:-)

I can login to voip.ms using my sip credential manually on the phone, but I’m looking for a way to automate this process by adding some lines to users.dat file. I googled the instructions on how to change users.dat file but couldn’t find anywhere.

Is there a way to change the text for each line key? Currently my phone displays truncated telephone numbers because it only allows maximum 9 characters. Also, I’m wondering if you can post some dial plan example.

Thanks,
David

Comment on Avaya Split MultiLink Trunking (SMLT) Layer 2 Trunking by Michael McNamara https://blog.michaelfmcnamara.com/2011/12/avaya-split-multilink-trunking-smlt-layer-2-trunking/#comment-88951 Thu, 22 Mar 2018 06:05:58 +0000 http://blog.michaelfmcnamara.com/?p=2557#comment-88951 Hi John,

This is covered in exhaustive detail elsewhere on the net… is’t a hash algorithm against the source and destination MAC addresses. The intent is that all the packets from a single conversation should flow over the same path, avoiding out of order frames, etc. That’s at Layer 2, if you when to Layer 3 (ECMP) you could do a round-robin as opposed to a hash. The load is caused by all the ARP packets trying to find all the desktops/laptops/servers/printers/etc in the network.

I’m not 100% sure… don’t believe I ever tried to enable DHCP relay without have IP routing enabled. I would expect that whatever device is acting as the router for that VLAN should also be doing the DHCP relay for that VLAN.

Sorry for the dumb question, I have a AVAYA 1230 phone and I successfully changed firmware to latest SIP firmware. I’m following your steps to provision the sip phone but stuck on users.dat file. Is there a way to supply my voip.ms sip credential in the file so when the phone boots up, it registers on voip.ms directly so I can make phone calls immediately. I tried to login on the phone but it didn’t work.

Thanks,
David

Procedure
1.In the vSphere Web Client, navigate to the host.
2.On the Configure tab, expand the System group of settings.
3.Select Advanced System Settings and click Edit.
4.Type the physical adapters that you want to use outside the scope of Network I/O Control as a comma-separated list for the Net.IOControlPnicOptOut parameter.

For example: vmnic2,vmnic3

5.Click OK to apply the changes.
6.In the vSphere Web Client, add the physical adapter to the distributed switch.

Is there a command to show how long a licence will last for?
Or is it meant to last the life of the unit?

sh system – shows we have no licences available between our Active and Standby units.

We have had one of our DCs fail who are still using these older devices, and it seems RF SW1 failed, and RFSW2 was rebooted, therefore we lost licence info, and now we are in search of a new RF SW1.

Please advise at your earliest convenience.

Can you explain to me how the avaya routing algorithm works when you have 2 x 4850 switches in a stack using SMLT connected to 2 x ERS8010 using 4 x 10gbps fibre connections. Why would a virtual machine route its traffic via one of the Core 8010 switches instead of the other?

The CPU on one of the 8080 switches was at 80% earlier and I could see that our scanning server was scanning all desktops using Core B and was wondering what determines that it chooses this route/core. Also, is it possible to spread the load over all uplinks, utilizing both core swicthes in order to spread the load?

Many Thanks,
John

You’ve saved me thousands of pages of frustratingly reading Nortel’s documents.

Question: When using a DHCP Relay for a specific VLAN, is it necessary to enable routing on that VLAN? I noted that when the IP interface is added to the VLAN that routing on that VLAN is automatically enabled.
