Avaya VPN Client Release 10.05.012 for Windows 7

Avaya has released version 10.05.012 of their VPN client that supports both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. This single client supports the following operating systems (in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions);

  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7

This release appears to be primarily geared around the Avaya re-branding effort so I wouldn’t advise that you rush out and upgrade right away.

“Nortel VPN Client” is been rebranded as “Avaya VPN Client”
With the transition from Nortel to Avaya, the product “Nortel VPN Client” has been renamed as “Avaya VPN Client”. Some preliminary rebranding was done in earlier releases. In this release, remaining components have been completed, including installer, install path, driver names and etc.

Here are the few “resolved” issues;

  • wi00883754 Unsupported Change/Repair options appear in Programs and Features
  • wi00872243 Long message gets trimmed in the app launch wait dialog.
  • wi00877055 During upgrade install, previously installed PLAP component may fail to show up.

You should refer to the release notes for all the details.

Nortel is no more…

I’ve been searching Google for the past few days waiting to see who one the Nortel IP asset sale,  and there was very little information until late yesterday when Nortel announced in a  press release that the sale and auction had been completed.

“After a multi-day auction, a consortium emerged as the winning bidder with a cash purchase price of US$4.5 billion. The consortium consists of Apple, EMC, Ericsson, Microsoft, Research In Motion and Sony”.

Interestingly enough it looks like Google was left walking away from the table without anything.

Will Google acquire the last bits of Nortel?

It would seem that the end is very near now for what’s left of Nortel. The sale and auction of the Nortel’s vast patent portfolio is scheduled for today, Monday June 27, 2011. As you probably already heard Google submitted a $900 million “stalking horse” bid for the portfolio back in May. Since that announcement there have been a number of interesting stories, including Microsoft and AT&T going to court on June 13 to argue that a “free and clear” patent sale would hurt the whole industry. On June 16 Nortel moved the scheduled auction date from June 20 to June 27 siting a significant level of interest in its approximately 6,000 patents and patent applications. Then on June 23 Apple apparently stepped into the fray with the blessing of U.S. anti-trust regulators.

I’m sure there are going to be quite a few other companies involved which we haven’t heard from yet.

Anyone wager to place any guesses?

Windows 7 x64 Service Pack 1 Installation Failed

This weekend I decided to install Service Pack 1 on my home Windows 7 x64 personal computer. As luck would have it the installation failed. The installation reported error 0x800f0a12 when I clicked on the details link. When I check the System Log I found the following event;

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932).

I examined the Component Based Servicing log (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.log) and found the following two entries;

With that information I turned to the great and powerful Google in search of enlightenment and found a reference to the following blog post on TechNet, Windows 7/2008 R2 Service Pack 1 fails with 0x800f0a12. That article provided a link to another Microsoft article entitled, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installation error: 0x800F0A12.

Apparently the error code 0x800f0a12 means the installer cannot access the system partition of the personal computer to update the files. This error can be caused by a few different issues including, the system partition isn’t automatically mounted, Windows is running on a storage area network (SAN), or a disk management tool from another software manufacturer was used to copy (or clone) the disk or partition on which you’re trying to install SP1.

The TechNet article advises users to run Diskpart which is the disk partitioning tool in Windows. However, the Microsoft article provides a command line solution by running the command mountvol /E as an administrator and then rebooting the computer.

Upgrading an MRV LX Terminal Server

I recently had a few issues with one of our MRV LX-4016T terminal servers and decided to upgrade the software. Unfortunately we don’t have a maintenance contract with MRV so I had to upload the (newer) software from a newly purchased LX-4008T to our TFTP server. I was then able to use that software to upgrade the LX-4016T which appears to have resolved the stability issues when connected to a pair of Citrix NetScalers.

The default username is InReach (case sensitive) with a password of access. The default enable password is system.

After upgrading the boot code I upgraded the software image;

With the software upgrade complete we now need to reload the terminal server so the new software and load.

That’s really all there was to it… pretty easy once you upload the software to a TFTP server.
