In my last ITNF post I mentioned that I was giving a presentation on Data Loss Prevention specifically as it relates to healthcare. The presentation went well but there was some shock and disbelief from a large portion of the audience in some of the numbers I quoted. I hope to release the slides, sanitized, later this week.

How and Why to Quit Feedburner Safely by Greg Ferro – Greg provides some pretty detailed instructions on how to successful migrate safely from Google’s Feedburner. I really like the minimalist design of Greg’s personal site and the Genesis based theme he’s using.
Wi-Fi Site-Surveying 101 by Andrew vonNagy – Andrew shares his insights into wireless site surveys. I personally done my fair share of site surveys usually utilizing tools from Fluke including the AirCheck and AirMagnet.
Using Notepad++ Vertical Selection for Mass Changes by Paul Stewart – Paul shares a very helpful tip for selecting text vertically, instead of just a block. And then performing a search-n-replace with some regex. Here’s my equivalent of Paul’s output,
awk '{ print "interface " $1 "\r shutdown\r"}' input.txt > output.txt
Show 158 – Avaya – Software Defined Data Centre & Fabric Connect by Packet Pushers (Greg Ferro, Ethan Banks and Paul Unbehagen) – Avaya sponsored a podcast with the Packet Pushers to talk about how Shortest Path Bridging fits in the Data Center and how it can interact with OpenStack.
How Not to DDoS Your Former Employer by Brian Krebs – I really enjoy following Brian on his journey into the dark interwebs.
Brian’s story reminded me of a similar experience I had in my first job. A few students at the college where I was the system administrator had written a fake login program and had it running on about a dozen dumb terminals. It would record any username and password entered and would then logout of the system and give the user a message making you think you had fat fingered the password. When they were called into the office they all had quite a smirk on their faces. They claimed they didn’t know anything and sure enough their accounts were empty. I asked them if they had ever seen what a tape backup reel looks like so I showed them the tape backs from the previous night and asked them to guess what we had found on it.

There was one fix that caught my eye regarding the following;
- On ERS55xx when the UPS was switched from AC to battery, all PoE ports went down (wi01112133)
I’ve discussed this problem with a number of people and we were all lead to believe this was an issue with the line-interactive UPS systems that we were using. I was shocked to see this in the release notes. I haven’t personally tested this yet but I need to-do so sometime soon.
Cheers!
