This is just really more a note for myself so I won’t need to spend 30 minutes searching for this answer in the future.
I recently worked up a design using the Motorola AP7131N to provide a semi-public WiFi hotspot for our shared physician session space. The Motorola AP7131 provides dual 802.11a/b/g/n radios along with 2 Ethernet ports and options for a third radio. The traditional fat access point is essentially a router/firewall with all the usual features. In my design the AP7131N is connected directly to a Comcast broadband Internet connection via an SMC 8014. The AP7131 provides a password protected WiFi hotspot and can be managed remotely via a static IP address which greatly helps and speeds any troubleshooting efforts. In locations where you need multiple access points for wireless coverage you can connect the two AP7131Ns via their Eth1 ports and both can be managed from a single AP7131N. We have two of these setups currently deployed and there are plans for another five or six on the project plan. Hopefully this design will serve us well.
There’s also a 3G WAN option should you want a backup to the traditional broadband that’s available in your area – assuming you have 3G coverage wherever you’ll be locating the AP7131N.
From the boot loader you just need to issue the following two commands;
set factory_defaults
reset
Here’s some context around what that might look like on an AP7131/AP7131N;

Hi,
We are a K-12 Non Profit school with almost no funding for I.T
I had a Brocade 7131 access point which was working ok.
I followed your directions and was successful in installing a Motorola 7131 Firmware via TFTP.
I was able to use the Smart Wizard to configure and all seemed ok but for some reason the clients dont see the SSID even though I have tried several times using Router Mode and Bridge Mode and every other possible combination.
Unfortunately I dont have a Brocade Firmware to go back to.
Am I missing something vey basic ?
Thanks

Which software release did you install?
If you connect to the console port do you see any error messages?
WiNG 4.x is pretty straight forward but WiNG 5.x is a big more complicated.
Good Luck

is there any way to delete firmware from the AP?i need to delete the firmware , from the ap 7131 .wipe it all ? do you have any solution?
thanks
Michael McNamara says
You would need to either upgrade or downgrade the firmware. If you wipe the firmware you’ll be left with a piece of hardware that won’t do anything when you plug it in.
Cheers!

What you have contained here for the 7131N is exactly what I need to do. How do you get to the boot loader prompt. I can’t find it anywhere, even in the admin guide. I am running 5.5. I finally got it upgraded, but can’t access from the network. So I want to set to factory defaults.
Thank you.
Michael McNamara says
Hi Scott,
I believe the AP7131 will prompt you with the following; “”Press esc key to run boot firmware”. You just need to press ESC or ENTER I believe to break the boot sequence which will leave you at the boot> prompt.
Good Luck!

Michael, i have this motorola but there i sometrhing wrong…
i have have used the router as a gateway for 2 years now, and all worked fine.
now i want to use it as wireles router for privat use, and want to reset the motorola, but i cant reach itr now.
i dont have a serial cable and dont know how to use putty… is there a possability to do it a diferent way?
Michael McNamara says
There was a tool that Motorola had that would perform a Layer 2 discovery of their AP650s and possibly the AP7131 but since then Zebra bought Motorola and now Extreme recently acquired the Wireless LAN division from Zebra so you’re likely to have more success ordering yourself a serial cable from Amazon and learning how to use PuTTY if you really want to recover the device.
Cheers!

Hello Michael,
I am trying to upgrade AP7131 from very old firmware 3.0 to 5.x. As far as i know, first I need to upgrade it to v3.1 and I am unable to find that version. Maybe you have it in your archives? Or a procedure to upgrade from v3.1 to v5.x?
Michael McNamara says
Sorry I don’t have any software.

A.P 7131 – ONLY RED LIGHT SHOWING IN RIGHT SIDE !!
WHAT WILL BE THE ISSUE ?
HOW I CAN SOLVE IT ?
Michael McNamara says
Hi Ahmed,
I believe there is a serial port on the AP7131, cable up to it and see what’s being dumped out of the console port. I’m guessing it’s s hardware error.
Cheers!
