We have a small amount of users that receive this error and it seems to indicate that the “Nortel VPN Service” is not running. What seems to happen is that the user will connect, accept the banner but the connection stops because the service is being killed for some reason. If you launch the client again you will then be presented with the “Failed to connect to VPN Service component” error. You can go into services to start the service again and they can then attempt to connect again. In our case there are only certain servers that seem to be causing this issue for users. We do not yet know why the service is dying.

When we have users with this issue it normally indicates that they are missing the “Base Filtering Engine” service. This service is normally removed by a virus. This is also for Windows 7 systems. Not sure if this would apply to XP.

Hi Allister,

You should advise your IT folks to upgrade their Juniper… Windows 7 has been supported for a number of years now (probably 2 at least).

You’d need to take those questions to your IT folks. You won’t be able to use an Avaya VPN Client to connect to connect with a Juniper SSL or SRX appliance. You can only use an Avaya VPN client to connect to an Avaya VPN router or Avaya VPN gateway. Your IT folks should have all the details.

Good Luck!

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

I should probably close this thread and update the post since there’s a newer version of the Avaya VPN client available for download at this URL;

Hi Thomas,

It’s difficult to say exactly what’s going on. Have you looked at the logs?

The issues can sometimes be problems with the personal computer, specifically Windows XP or sometimes issues with the communications. Has it ever worked? Do you have another PC to test it on? Have you checked with the people supporting the VPN router?

At a minimum you could try uninstalling and reinstalling the client. You should also verify that you don’t have any other VPN clients install as they’ll usually interfere with each other.

Good Luck!

My office laptop is loaded with windows xp, and I am able to connect to corporate network using Juniper network connect.
Now I want to access corporate network(intranet) from my personal laptop as well, which is running on Windows 7. Unfortunately, juniper network client is available and supported on Windows Xp/2000 only.

I then found out about this Avay VPN client, but still struggled to connect successfully. I am not sure if I could use the same credentials(uname and password) I used for Avaya Remote Access(ARA) or my normal Avaya Credentials. I tried both but to no avail.

I tried connecting using IPSec, and I have given “ara-apac1.avaya.com” as the destination. I am not sure If this will be working though..

Since this is totally new thing to me, Could you please suggest some configuration document (with screen shots)..

By the way the error message I got is “Unable to reach the server”

-Thanks
Allister

first of all thx for your great work and blog !

We have an issue with VPN client. After starting and giving credentials, everything looks normal, the client says connecting and shows a Window with the company rules to accept. So far so good, looks like it is connected but when I check, there is no tunnel established. Clicking on VPN Icon gives an error message: “Failed to connect to VPN Service component”

Any idea ?

Thx,

Thomas

Hi Subin,

You’ll need to check the properties of your LAN and WLAN connections. Are you using a local HOST file?

You need to see what the name resolution order is when you are connected to via the two different methods. Look at the DNS and WINS servers and HOST file entries.

Cheers!

Sorry if it was not clear.

The issue is ‘local computer name’ do not resolve to virtual IP after connecting to my Office N/w through Avaya and the main internet connection is wireless…

If I ping my system it still shows the 192.XX.XX.XX IP[My Home Internet IP Range] instead of the 159.XX[Office IP Range].

Thanks
Subin Babu

Hi Subin,

I’m not following you all that well. Are you saying that connected to wireless the client doesn’t work but hard wired it does work?

The Avaya (formerly Nortel) VPN client has never worked very well over a wireless connection. If your wireless connection is constantly dropping (little wireless box pops-up every once-n-while) then your probably best to say with a wired connection.

Cheers!

Hi Ben,

Unfortunately the only easy solution you’ll probably find is to rebuild (re-image) your machine by formatting the hard disk and re-install Windows XP. I’ve seen a lot of odd issues over the years and with all the different root-kits and malware out in the wild and it’s really difficult to try and resolve or identify these types of problems. While that’s usually the last resort you can try and make sure that any older clients are fully removed (un-installed) and that any other VPN clients (Cisco, Juniper, etc) are also removed. You could also try to reset your TCP stack, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357.

Sorry I don’t have better information.

Good Luck!

I am on Avaya VPN client 10.05.100 with Win7.By connecting through Wireless Adapter to my Home n/w and then connecting to my company n/w through VPN client I am getting the Home n/w ‘s IP while pinging the Full qualified name of my machine….

Through a LAN connection the above ping shows me the correct Office IP.

IP Config shows both the network IPs[Office/Home]..

Any thoughts why the local system name is not resolved to virtual ip after connecting through Avaya/Wireless connection/Win 7 system..?

Appreciate your help
Thanks

Thanks for hosting this software. I am on a client site that uses this software and I am having install issues and I haven’t found anything that sounds like my issue by searching on google. I am running Windows XP Pro. I started trying to use version 10.04.108 as this is what I was provided, I have also tried this newest version. For both versions the install hangs up about 3/4 through and never finishes, I let it go all night. The desktop icon and startup shortcuts are there but they don’t work. If I try to install/uninstall I get an error saying an install is partially done. Eventually I have to forcefully quit it via task manager. After a reboot I had no network connections (no LAN, not wireless etc) and had to do a system restore to get back where it was. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for any help!
– Ben

Hi Abdel,

That’s a function of the VPN configuration… you’d need to speak to whomever manages your VPN router/gateway. They would need to enable Split Tunneling to allow you to maintain your connection to the Internet outside of your VPN tunnel.

Cheers!

Thanks for your reply; I have entered the Group Authentication correctly. I can confirm that I also contacted my IT Support and they told me my account had locked out; I had them reset it but resorted back to version NVC32-10.01.103 which does not lock my account, any reason why the new version would? Thanks.
