Avaya has released 2.1.8.0 software for the Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 series.
This release is significant in that it adds three previously missing features;
- VLACP
- SLPP
- ECMP
The Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 series also supports IST/SMLT configurations for use in small core designs.
Until recently I had been using a large number of ERS 1648 switches as remote edge routers for Ethernet or dark fiber connected WAN sites. In case you’re curious we recently starting using the ERS 5530 with the Advanced License to enable OSPF routing.
You can find the official release notes here.
Cheers!

Hi Michael,
I apologies if this is not the correct place to ask questions!
We have an ERS1600 and it has been getting the following error in the logs for some time without any apparent network impact:
CPU1 [02/09/11 14:14:45] HAL WARNING NPAL_AddArp: could not create local host route 172.19.4.50 for ifindex -1
CPU1 [02/09/11 14:14:45] HAL WARNING NPAL_AddArp: could not create local host route 172.19.4.89 for ifindex -1
000: [02/09/11 14:14:42] The previous message repeated 1 time(s).
However more recently, we had users reporting a loss in connectivity and looking at the logs they had changed:
24:0c301b5ba6d86884eb8c4c03e8fc79108adb874dcae8658e CPU1 [02/09/11 14:14:38] HAL WARNING NPAL_AddArp: could not create local host route 172.19.8.189 for ifindex 75
24:0c301b5ba6d86884eb8c4c03e8fc79108adb874dcae8658e CPU1 [02/09/11 14:14:37] HAL WARNING NPAL_AddArp: could not create local host route 172.19.4.45 for ifindex -1
000: [02/09/11 14:14:34] The previous message repeated 3 time(s).
The long string has appears and the some kind of delimiting character?
Have you seen this before and any idea of the cause?
Kind Regards
Matt

I did not see any reply to the above question. I am now seeing this same error after installing 3 Proxim wireless AP’s. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Larry
Michael McNamara says
Hi Larry,
Are the Proxim APs proxy ARPing for a large number of IP clients?
You are overloading the ARP table on the switch, if you check the ARP table you’ll find it probably has a couple of hundred/thousand ARP entries.
Good Luck!
Larry Williams says
The Proxim APs are not proxy ARPing. Our 1612 only shows around 150 address in the ARP table. This problem started when we added 3 APs on a different subnet than the one that was already working. The original is still working on its original subnet. Every 24 hours or so the 1612 will not route any new users that try to access the network. Any user already up on the network continues to work. Any other suggestions that you have wuld be greatly appreciated.
Michael McNamara says
When the problem occurs you need to dump the MAC/FDB and ARP tables to see what’s going on, I’m guessing it’s going to be full.
Are you sure the APs are not proxy ARPing at the time of the problem? Is there the potential for a bridging loop somewhere else in the network?
Good Luck!
Larry Williams says
Hi Michael
I issued a show tech on the router when we had a report that new users could not route across the network and there were less that 200 entries in the MAC/FDB and ARP tables. We are continuing to look for a loop in that area.
Thanks for your help and suggestions,
Larry
Michael McNamara says
There’s something consuming the memory in the switch/router… what else are you running on the network? Multicast? PIM-SM?
Cheers!

Hi Micheal,
Do you have any idea on how to re-install firmware on a Passport 1624G. I have formated the flash, and now i have no idea on how to get it re-installed
Michael McNamara says
Hi Naveen,
If the ERS 1624G still boots up to the boot manager you should be able to configure one of the Ethernet ports with an IP address and then transfer the software to the /flash filesystem via TFTP.
Good Luck!

We are running PIM-SM. It was enabled on the two vlans for the access points, I have that disabled now. Prior to disabling PIM tonight I was getting the following warning:
CPU1 [11/20/12 21:35:21] HAL WARNING NPAL_CreateNhId: could not create next hop 192..xxx.xxx.xxx, Status 1
CPU1 [11/20/12 21:35:21] HAL WARNING NPAL_CreateNhId: could not create next hop 192..xxx.xxx.xxx, Status 1 .
I have been capturing the port data with wireshark looking for a device that is getting a lot of ARP declines but I have not found anything yet. We are having to reboot the router every 12 hours,
