The processing performance on the virtual host is a tremendous increase over GoDaddy’s shared hosting. The web pages from this blog now serve up in about 1.5 seconds, whereas it was taking almost 5 – 7 seconds on a shared host. From an Internet bandwidth perspective it hasn’t been bad but I’ve noticed it can be slower than GoDaddy when moving large files.

Cheers!

I’ve implemented a CDN with a shared hosted website not at godddy, but the speed still isn’t there. I’m wondering if I should just take the plunge also,

I spent some time over the weekend syncing up the files from my current site and importing the MySQL databases. I stumbled for a hour or so tonight trying to figure out why Apache wouldn’t recognize my .htaccess file and my rewrite statements… I was missing the proper AllowOverride command in httpd.conf.

It was fun to mess around with the system tonight, amazing how fast you can forget things if you don’t stay current with them.

Cheers!

Maybe try http://www.vpsnoc.com they are reasonable with pricing and offerings for unmanaged servers.

I made the jump from a shared hosting plan to their $20/Month special about three months back and I could not be happier.

There is no pretty management interface, and once you’re VPS is setup everything else is up to you. However, for most geeks that’s not a problem.

Support is very responsive, and they hang out regularly in their own IRC channel.

Coming from a shared plan you will notice an immediate speed increase! As a bonus you get an IPV6 IP as well as the usual IPV4.
