no matter what i do i cannot get passed it . i have managed to repair quite a fue of theses switches using cloned doms and reinstalling the port key and flashing to the most current firmware but this fault is a no go regardless of what firmware i put on the dom. i have tryed known working doms.
i cannot enter the cli it says temporaraly unavailable
any suggestions as this fault seems to be getting very frequent across the 5100 switches so im having to write them off.

That’s very impressive Brian… I think you are only the second person I’ve ever heard from that was able to resize/clone the DOM. I believe the 128MB DOM size was a limitation of the early operating system… I’m not 100% sure but I believe the license file is tied to the MAC address so you might run into problems cloning the DOM and sticking it into another Wireless LAN Switch.

Thanks for the follow-up!

Well I was able to get everything running again. I installed the DOM in my PC. Booted Debian 7.04 Live. I then found that the DOM was only partitioned for 128MB. I then resized the partition to 256MB. I reinstalled the DOM in the switch and after 2 or 3 reboots and some database rebuilding performed by the system, my switch was back up and running. I was then able to upgrade the unit to 3.3.3.5-002R. Everything works great now. I did purchase a used unit on eBay for $35 including shipping. It worked great and was already running 3.3.3.0-006R. I was able to upgrade it to 3.3.3.5-002R also.

After all this, I then connected the DOM to an IDE to USB adapter and was able to create an image using Ghost. I did find some DOMs on Amazon that I am going to try out in one of the units after I install the Ghost image on them. They were only $15 each.

Thanks to this blog, I was able to get some ideas to try to fix this issue on my own.

Thanks for the great blog Michael. I was able to learn a lot about these switches from it.

You’ll probably find a replacement unit on eBay easier than cloning the original DOM.

Cheers!

After running the PreUpgradeScript, I then tried executing the WS5100-3.3.3.0-006R.v2. It failed stating it expected 256MB and that there was not enough free space even though the PreUpgradeScript said there was. I am guessing I need to upgrade the DOM to a 256MB unit. I also am now booting up to DIAG mode. I noticed that some have been ghosting an image to there DOM. If I can get a 256MB DOM like the Transcend TS256MDOM44H-S, can anyone supply me with a ghost image so I can try getting this thing up and running. I am also wondering if I can copy my img and cfg file back to the switch. I am not sure what the ip address of the switch is when in DIAG mode.

The flash IDE drives in the WS5000s are known to fail over time so that’s probably the issue.

Sorry.

Hi Alex,

What IP address is currently configured?

show ip inter brief

If you’re actually asking how to configure the IP address, then you should refer to the Getting Started Guide.

Good Luck!

Hi Alex,

You can utilize a standard Cisco console cable (19200-8-N-1) and console up to the RFS6000.

Good Luck!

I can get logged in to the GUI. I want to restart/reboot this switch remotely, but don’t see where this option is located in the GUI. Do I need to be onsite and just disconnect power and reconnect? I was under the impression that there is a restart/reboot option somewhere in the GUI menu.

Hi Francisco,

The RFS6000 utilizes a standard Cisco pinout for the console port. You need to set the speed to 19,200bps not the standard 9600bps.

Good Luck!

I haven’t seen one of those in ages… I believe the default username was admin with a password of symbol. The console port runs at 19200 baud like most every piece of Symbol/Motorola gear.

I can’t say exactly if there’s an option to factory reset, have you tried interrupting the boot cycle to see if there are any options there?

Good Luck!

For anyone else looking for the answer.

I believe the newer Motorola Wireless LAN Switches utilize “admin” and “superuser” for their username/password combination.

Hi Alma,

You’re English is pretty good… or Google Translate is doing a great job!

The default username/password varies depending on the software release you are running. You realize that you must enter “cli” at the first login prompt? After that you can enter the username (and password) that you created. Look at the same output below, at the login prompt answer cli, then at the username prompt answer admin with the password you created.

WS-5000 login: cli

now I’m able to login to the cli with admin/symbol but when I logout from the cli (bye command) and I try to login as admin/symbol, the sistem tell me: Login incorrect.

I also created anoter user with administrative right but the reslult is the same.

Please can you tell me what I do wrong.

Thankyou for your Help.
