I use BGP extensively to provide dynamic routing between a number of vendors, business partners and affiliated organizations with whom I’m multi-homed to. I recently had to determine if Nortel/Avaya supported eBGP MultiHop on the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 software release 5.x (they do). Thankfully I was able to peer with a Cisco 6500 switch

Avaya has released software 6.2.0 for the Ethernet Routing Switch 5500/5600 series switches. In order to upgrade to 6.2 software the switch will already need to be running 6.x software along with firmware (diagnostic software) 6.0.0.6. If you are building a MAN or WAN utilizing directly attached dark fiber cabling you’ll most certainly want to use SFPs (small form-factor pluggable) or mini-GBICs that have DDI capabilities. With the introduction of 5.x software (I believe it was 5.x software although don’t quote me in the New York Times) for the ERS 8600

Well… it’s kinda funny if you know some more background why all those other 5 versions where pulled. There was a major bug introduced in 5, which has been solved top priority in 5.1.1.1 So Nortel choose the safeside to remove all other version from the webside as a service to the customer (no confusion). LOL sweeping their own street pretty clean I would say.

Hi Qaz,
I can only share what I know… but as you hint to I’m sure there was some major issue(s) that caused them to pull the previous 5.x releases. I never heard of any issues personally, probably because so many people are still reeling from the 4.1.6.x release and haven’t yet jumped to the 5.x software. I only have 2 switches out of 36 that are running 5.x software, and then those 34 remaining switches only 8 of them are running 4.1.8.x while all the others are running 4.1.3.x.
Cheers!
